Well, maybe you do have an office at home. Or maybe you would like to have one. It can be a real challenge. How do you get started? How can you improve it so you actually feel like doing some work?
First of all, how about you have a look to this Vídeo ’10 DIY Hacks To Improve Your Home Office’ by Maxwell Ryan from Apartment Therapy? Let’s get your Business English to the next level by testing your listening skills with this great video. While we do that you might get a few cool ideas!
Did you click on the link and watch the video? Fantastic. What do you think about this ten tips? Let’s discuss about them together.
1- Use natural materials.
Maxwell Ryan recommends using materials such as wood, leather and plants. They bring some warmth to the room, don’t they? A natural wood desk, a leather pad or other elements to add that cosy feeling. We love having plants in our office. The challenge is to keep them alive and healthy! Do you have any advice on that front? Also having nice pics gives it a bit of a touch.
2- Build your own desk.
What a great idea! His suggestion is to buy an Ikea countertop. It will not cost you shedloads of money, and you can make it as big as you need. You can have the countertop cut to whatever length you want, so it can fit nicely in any space you may have available in your place. Who doesn’t love a bit of a stroll by IKEA?
3- Turn the wall behind your desk into an Accent Wall.
Be brave! Just put a nice bold strong coloured paint or use wallpaper. Some offices use very light colour to keep it on the ‘Ibiza’ kind of vibe. Would you be corageous enough to put a colour like the one you see in the video?
4- Use more than one screen.
Obviously it is a lot better if you use a laptop. Good for your eyes, and also a great deal better for your body posture.
5- Get a very nice mouse and keyboard set.
You might get problems in your wrist if your arms posture is not comfortable. That can lead to serious problems as it was brought up in the video.
6- Invest in an ergonomic chair.
Well, that’s Maxwell’s recommendation. You can get a decent chair in Spain for about a hundred bucks, can’t you? But having said that, did you notice the stool he showed there? Do you find a stool a good option to keep a good posture for long hours? What do you prefer?
7- Use a coloured filing cabinet.
If you don’t generate shedloads of paperwork, one of these could suffice. We at U24business have not one but 3 filing cabinets! What filing system would you recommend?
8- Keep your cords under control.
It is a right pain in the neck all those cords hanging behind the desks, isn’t it? Great suggestion to get a bit of double-sided velcro to keep your cords organised. You can cut it to any length you want and you can always take it off. It is way better than the cable ties we’ve been using for a while!
9- Boost your wifi.
Having good wifi in your home office is absolutely essential to be able to work effectively from home. Agreed. When you are in a hurry the last thing you want is to have painfully slow connection. Can you recommend any particular wifi booster?
10- Add warm light to your desk.
It’s not only about lighting, it’s also about style. Maxwell talks on this video about maybe having something vintage lamp. Would you like to share your funkiest choice of lighting?
