Think Locally is a great initiative to support fantastic local independent shops, services, pubs and restaurants in the UK. Let’s have a debate on local businesses.
ACTIVITY
Two sides will debate supporting different views. Team up, do a little bit of thinking, and let’s debate!
Description
A report showed recently the ‘damage’ done to our beautiful high streets:
- 41 per cent of the towns surveyed in the UK were ‘clone towns’ where more than half the stores were chains.
- Cambridge was found to be the UK’s most cloned town with only nine varieties of shop on the main high street.
- Richmond had the most cloned London high street surveyed, with only five independent shops on its entire length.
Should UK towns resist the advance of chain stores or embrace it? Do you prefer towns to be different and genuinely distinctive, sourced by local suppliers?
On the other hand, chain stores bring jobs and sustainable business to our towns.
Team 1) Support the local independents
Team 2) Support lookalike chain stores
