So you want to talk about something, let’s say, a little bit delicate. How do you introduce the subject?
It might be advisable to prepare the ground for it. How can you do it? Use a questions and sentences such as:
‘Can I ask you something?’
‘I hope you don’t mind me asking…’
‘Do you mind if I ask you…?’
‘You don’t have to answer this, but…’
‘I don’t mean to intrude, but…’
This tells the other person that a sensitive issue is on the way. No nasty surprises there! It also conveys the idea that you will respect if the other person prefers not to share information on the subject.
ACTIVITY
Think about three potentially delicate subjects to discuss with:
- A client
- A supplier
- A manager in your business
Now re-create the conversation using these and other questions / sentences.
